Living Lab 1 under the PrAEctiCe project, focused on the potential of agro-ecological practices in East Africa, specifically Circular Water-Energy-Nutrient Systems, held an Open Day at Vicinaqua in Kisumu. Maseno University is a key partner in this initiative. The event aimed to highlight a range of innovative technologies designed to improve the livelihoods of young people both within Kisumu and beyond. These included technologies such as MBR, RAS, irrigation systems, black soldier fly farming, value addition, aquaponics, aquariums, feed formulation, and fingerling production.
The Open Day gave the public the opportunity to explore and learn about new technologies that could be applied at the household level to enhance food production.
Representatives from various development partners attended the event, including the State Department of Fisheries of Kisumu County, Maseno University, KIWASCO, KFS, KEMFRI, KIRDI, KCB, WARMA, the Government Chemist, Sani Wise, Aquaban, Captain Feeds, and more.

During the event, Hon. Kenneth Onyango, the CECM for Agriculture, Irrigation, Livestock, Fisheries, and the Blue Economy, ( Middle in Picture) emphasized that the technologies on display at Vicinaqua have revolutionized the way youth are involved in agriculture, particularly in the value chain. He expressed concern that agriculture had been largely left to the elderly and stressed the need for a change in this trend. Hon. Onyango underscored the importance of disseminating such technologies and skills to help shift the youth’s perspective on agriculture and empower them to become employers. He remarked, “Earning a degree is not the end goal, but it should shape your perspective toward the world.”
Madam Susan Adhiambo, Director of Fisheries and Blue Economy (right), highlighted that the project recycles waste water for both agriculture and aquaculture, meeting FAO standards for suitability. She also shared the success of the project’s initiatives, noting the creation of three companies that have generated employment. She emphasized the goal of incubating more such companies moving forward. Madam Adhiambo also spoke about the collaboration between academia, research, and practice, particularly with Maseno University and KIRDI, to enhance value addition and establish market linkages.

Mr. Charles Kakuku, the Director of Livestock, encouraged the youth to remain resilient, consistent, independent, and focused to improve their livelihoods. Similarly, Mr. Walter Odum, the Director of Agriculture, called for the adoption of a circular economy, emphasizing the efficient use of scarce resources.
Mr. Kevin Wamira, County Project Coordinator for the ABDP program, noted that the event provided a platform to celebrate and explore the impact of agro-ecological practices. He urged farmers to apply what they learned to promote sustainable aquaculture while conserving the environment.
This event marked a significant step in promoting innovative agricultural practices, empowering youth, and advancing sustainable development in Kisumu and the broader East African region.
