Fun Fact: Did you know that despite having more than 60% of the world’s uncultivated arable land, Africa still faces tremendous obstacles in attaining food security?

Food insecurity is a major problem in Africa, with an estimated 240 million people suffering from chronic hunger. This issue is especially serious for smallholder farmers, who often lack access to the resources and expertise required to increase agricultural yields.

To address this problem, the EU-funded PrAEctiCe project is reviewing a number of indicators that might be used to assist farmers in transitioning to better agroecological practices. These practices are intended to improve food security, boost biodiversity and soil health, and reduce agricultural impact on the environment. Maseno University is in charge of this Work Package (WP3).

Agroecological practices can include the use of natural fertilizers, crop rotation, and intercropping, among others. These practices not only help farmers increase their yields but also reduce the risk of crop failure due to pests, diseases, or extreme weather conditions.

The PrAEctiCe project is working with local farmers and stakeholders in several African countries, including Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. The WP3 aims to develop a set of practical indicators that can be used to assess the impact of agroecological practices on food security and other related outcomes.

The PrAEctiCe project aims to improve sustainable agriculture and food security in East Africa through its activities.  With the right policies and support, smallholder farmers can transition to more sustainable and productive farming practices that can help ensure a steady and reliable food supply for their communities.
